Dear ADASS attendee (past, present, and/or future),
(and with apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message)
As the 23rd ADASS conference is approaching, we would also like to
cast a look at the past.
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) has been publishing the
ADASS proceedings without interruption and many of us own a stack of
several of these volumes. Two years ago, after publishing Volume XX,
the publisher approached us with the suggestion to assemble, at ASP's
expense, a commemorative volume presenting a retrospective of 20 years
of ADASS (*see note below*).
That volume will be available to ADASS XXIII attendees in a special deal:
For 22 years ADASS attendees have received with their registration a
hardcopy of the proceedings. This year the ADASS Program Organizing
Committee has decided to change the format: the proceedings will still
be published by ASP, but it will be electronic and, like all previous
volumes
(unique to ADASS!), with open access.
However, attendees will have the option, in exchange for a $60 raise in
their registration fee, to receive a hardcopy of the ADASS XXIII
proceedings.
And those who choose that option will receive for free a copy of the
commemorative volume, courtesy of ASP.
Check out ADASS XXIII:

With our best regards and hoping to see you in Waikoloa,

Note:
The commemorative volume will be a monograph titled "Twenty Years of ADASS".
>From the synopsis on its back cover:
"This retrospective includes previously published articles from the
ADASS I through ADASS XX proceedings volumes, selected by the
individual proceedings editors. The papers not only reflect on the
state of the art at the time of original publication but also retain
the flavor of the individual conferences. Many of these papers have
had significant impact on the development of astronomical software
over the past two decades, and will continue to do so in the future."
Editing proceedings is labor-intensive and puts a heavy load on colleagues
whose primary job is to do research, manage observatories, or develop
software. Ian Evans, the lead editor of ADASS Volume XX, has assembled
the commemorative volume together with support from other past editors.
