Subject: Bringing Code to Data - quick docker/virtualization survey for ADASS

Dear colleagues,

For ADASS this year we have offered a survey talk on “bringing the code to the data”.

A number of institutes are considering allowing external users to submit code for execution inside the institute's infrastructure, close to, or co-located with, a large dataset, enabling easier or faster access to the data.

In addition, many institutes are looking at using technologies such as Docker combined with programming languages such as Python as an easy way to configure a range of tasks.

For example In ESAC we are using Docker to allow users to deploy Python code to work alongside the archive data, accessed via a web interface to their algorithm or application. Other institutes are considering accepting code to run in a specific container or accepting container or virtual machine images directly.

If you are looking at something along these lines we would be most interested to have a brief response from you concerning a handful of questions. We hope you would take 10 minutes to answer them here :
